So-called "AI" concerns us along with considerations about how it will change our lives in the future. Together with Richard Stallman members of the AI Task Force (a group within the Ethics Association of German Economy) will exchange their ideas and discuss topics such as: Which AI varieties are in use and what problems arise with their different technologies? What do neural networks imply about the question of software in general and how do they affect the freedom of their users? Are We Facing Surveillance Like in China?

Digital technology has enabled governments to impose surveillance that Stalin could only dream of, making it next to impossible to talk with a reporter undetected.  This puts democracy in danger. Stallman will present the absolute limit on general surveillance in a democracy, and suggest ways to design systems not to collect   dossiers on all citizens.

A Free Digital Society

There are many threats to freedom in the digital society.  They include massive surveillance, censorship, digital handcuffs, nonfree software that controls users, and the War on Sharing. Other threats come from use of web services.  Finally, we have no positive right to do anything in the Internet; every activity is precarious, and can continue only as long as companies are willing to cooperate with it.

Tuesday, July 5 2016, 6.30 p.m. @University Frankfurt, Campus Westend,
Hörsaalzentrum, Saal HZ 6

James Joyce "Ulysses" Reding Group

We just set up a meetup for a Ulysses Reading Group. At our first meeting we will get a general overview of Ulysses.

To start with we will have a first look on the overall plot of Ulysses, its particular style and its parallels to Homer's Odyssey. We will learn about its editions, comments and helpful tools we can use. We will also learn about the author and talk about what makes this work so fascinating to us and many others. Then we will develop a draft plan about how we will go on reading the book. Nothing is yet set. We will determine it together.

First meeting: Friday, August 28th 2015, 6.00 p.m. at the new location of Lhamo Bistro (Grempstr. 2-4, 60487 Frankfurt)

Please register at meetup.com.

Copyright vs. Community

Copyright developed in the age of the printing press, and was designed to fit with the system of centralized copying imposed by the printing press.  But the copyright system does not fit well with computer networks, and only draconian punishments can enforce it.

The global corporations that profit from copyright are lobbying for draconian punishments, and to increase their copyright powers, while suppressing public access to technology.  But if we seriously hope to serve the only legitimate purpose of copyright - to promote progress, for the benefit of the public - then we must make changes in the other direction.
